Adding hotspots to your online publications will greatly improve the usability of your online publications and successfully drive traffic to your site to boost your online marketing results. Depending on the size of your publications and the frequency with which new ones are released adding hotspots can also be a time-consuming job.
Below you will find several methods that will help automate the processes involved in tagging your online publications with hotspots.
When creating a new publication in Publitas by default you'll find the option "Create Hotspots automatically" enabled. With this, the system will look for email addresses and web addresses in the copy of the pages and convert these into Link hotspots. If the PDF also contains clickable areas that also point to web addresses or to a certain page of the document these will be converted to Link hotspots and Page-jump hotspots respectively.
All hotspots generated during the creation of the online publication will use the default hover text, set at ••• > Publication Reader > Hotspots, except for the email addresses. Here, the hover text will show the email address.
Product feed integration
Copying over all these details from your site will be very time consuming. This is why we support and recommend importing these details into your Publitas account using a product data feed.
Once all product data is imported you only have to look up and select the appropriate product and all relevant details will be added into the hotspot automatically.
When you open your catalog in the hotspot editor, we automatically detect the products that are on the current page(s) of your publication, and then list them in a section called Detected products.
Publitas scans the page(s) for SKUs or product IDs and matches them with the product IDs in your product feed. The matching products will then be displayed as detected products.
In order to use the new product detection feature for your publications, you’ll need two things:
In the Enterprise version of Publitas, the system can automatically draw the hotspots for you, by taking the detected products and generating a product hotspot for each of them. These will be automatically placed on top of the corresponding SKU, visible on the page. The only thing left to do is to resize the hotspots.

Once the feature is enabled and you have imported your product feed into the desired publication group, you can go ahead and upload the PDF into your Publitas CMS. When the publication is ready, you can resize or move the automatically generated product hotspots based on your preference.
Keep in mind that the product IDs in both the product feed and in the PDF(s) must be identical. Because the feature looks for exact matches there can be no inconsistent characters or spaces. Otherwise, the automatic generation and tagging of the product hotspots will not take place.
Other additional helpful considerations are:
- The feature is activated for each publication group individually.
- The required product feed needs to be imported into the same publication group where you will upload the relevant PDF(s).
- The SKUs must be under/enclosed in the ID attribute for each item in the product feed (if the SKUs are in other attributes, the automatic detection will not work).
Once you have uploaded the PDF(s) into the given publication group, open the publication editor and look for SKUs on the pages. Drag one of the corners of each hotspot to resize it. Then, move the icon within the hotspot area to an appropriate location (learn more about icon positioning).
